Guest Blog | Rick Dalton - Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World

Why this song? Because it's beautiful, for one. This version is of course inspired by the great Israel "IZ" KaÊ»anoÊ»i KamakawiwoÊ»ole, one of the sweetest voices the world has ever known. I first heard this song ten years ago on the show “E.R.” It was featured during an incredibly beautiful and heart wrenching moment toward the end of an episode called “On The Beach” (Season 8, Episode 21). It played during the last moments of Dr. Mark Greene's life. I was so into that show, the guy felt like my old, dear friend. I just watched it again and cried my eyes out. It's one of the finest moments in television history, in my opinion, especially if you followed the character and story. I remember one time, at my friend Jason's wedding reception, a number of people, myself included, gathered around the P.A. speaker when this song started playing. All of us admitted that we were drawn together thinking the same thing, the death of this fictional character. We all loved Dr. Greene. Great stories are human kind's favorite thing, right?

The show led me to track down the song on mp3, and find out about the singer. If you haven't heard of Israel Kaʻanoʻi Kamakawiwoʻole, you should search him out, hear more of his music, and learn his story. He had an amazing life, and has become the best selling Hawaiian musician of all time.

I've wanted to sing this song since I heard it, ideally just like IZ, with nothing but vocals and ukulele. Barry Dodd had the Ragged Isle Season 2 Premiere Party coming up at Geno's in Portland, with musicians from the RI cast and crew performing, and I badly wanted to be a part of it. I tried to find a karaoke version of the song because I can't play ukulele, but there wasn't one to be found. I noticed the word “ukulele” in a post on Facebook, from my friend Meghan. I have known Meghan for many years, and have been in the same place at the same time as her many times, but we had only actually talked on a few occasions in all those years. I instant messaged her on the old FB, and it looked like this:
Luckily, she had a rehearsal space. So, I rigged up a makeshift P.A. with a mike and a Sirius boom box, and we had a number of rehearsals. We both had a lot of fun working on the song and chatting it up, and have since become closer friends. Meghan is one of the most intelligent, interesting, and enjoyable people I know, one of my top faves, and we came together through a song. Now we enjoy regular visits and great conversations. She calls them “walks” and they seem to involve movement, and being outside without a computer screen. It takes great conversation to get me around the block without taking a cab.

There were lots of great performances the night of the premiere, and a great time was had by all in attendance. It was such a thrill to finally get to perform Somewhere Over The Rainbow live. Meghan kicked ass. Thank God she tackled the tougher job. And of course, it was pure magic to watch the Ragged Isle Season 2 premiere on the big screen, and see everyone cheering the battleships and aircraft carriers!

Love,

Rick Dalton

No Refund For Content Episode One

The Entertainment Experiment proudly presents Episode One of the new comedy series No Refund For Content called "A Kernel For A Kernel." Stay tuned because later today we will be releasing the 2nd episode!

The Other Bones

As I was editing our sizzle reel for the network, I was listening to a local music compilation I had recently downloaded when the track "Feels Like Home" by the group The Other Bones came on. I was instantly in love with the track and it seemed to be the perfect song to use for our montage video. I crossed my fingers and contacted the group, hoping that they would be interested in lending their song to our project. Turns out they are super nice and not only let us use the song but also allowed us to use the title as our network slogan.

Thanks so much to Andy, Eric & Loretta for allowing us to use their art! Here is a music video done by local filmmaker Jason Bosch for their song. The performance was captured live and it really shows off how talented this trio is!

2 times the Ricchio!

We're super excited at The Entertainment Experiment to not have one but two shows starring Maine foodie celebrity and all around filthy mouthed lovable rock star Joe Ricchio!

First up is FOOD COMA TV. Based on Joe Ricchio’s exceedingly popular blog Portland Food Coma, FOOD COMA TV is a series of short films that will report on the oft-overlooked food culture of Maine that exists outside of Portland’s city limits.

We've also got the all brand-spankin' new FOOD COMA SHOW! Each episode Ricchio sits down with four guests at an area restaurant, where they proceed to manhandle multiple courses while discussing a range of topics, with the focus on food and booze. The cuisine of the restaurant, as well as the personal style of the chef, are showcased beautifully.

Our first official press release!

New online network to feature Maine’s digital talent

The Entertainment Experiment, the producers of the award-winning web series Ragged Isle, announced Saturday they will be launching a website to support Maine’s online storytellers on November 19th.

The Entertainment Experiment Network hopes to be the ultimate destination for fans of Maine online artists. It will serve as a community where these digital artists will not only share their work with a global audience but also collaborate with each other.

“We have such a great pool of talent here in Maine,” says Amie Marzen, the Entertainment Experiment’s Director of Marketing. “Our hope is that the online network will help not only with exposure, but that the artists will also be able to combine resources. Most of these projects are very grassroots, often funded out of pocket. Being able to combine strengths is crucial to our collective success.”

The website, located at www.entertainmentexperiment.com will primarily feature the growing genre of web series, which is a condensed television show produced exclusively for an online audience, as well as other digital artistry, including podcasts, web comics, short films, and online video games. These offerings all have one thing in common in that they are produced independently in Maine by Mainers.

The tagline for the network is “It feels like home”, which is exactly the Maine-centered mentality behind the online network. “We really want to stay true to our roots and help one another," says the Entertainment Experiment’s programming director, Barry Dodd. “We’re all very proud to live in Maine and want to help support more creativity in our state. I want the world to know about the talent we have here and I want that talent to have access to the largest global audience our network can attract.”

Kicking off the network are new Maine web series Haunt ME, The Food Coma Show and No Refund for Content. They’ll join Maine favorites Ragged Isle, Vacationlanders, and The Cleansed. The Entertainment Experiment Network will be searching for new and exciting web talent from all corners of Maine.

“With the network in place, we’re hoping to inspire a new crop of local creators in the making. Pulling from the success of our established shows, we want to create a welcoming environment for all those who have an interesting story to tell,” says Dodd.

The website will also feature behind the scenes content, merchandise, and ways to help support each series.

“We’re so thrilled to be launching the network and can’t wait to get it going,” says Marzen. “It’s been a longtime dream of ours and we have a great team on board. We have some big plans to further help Maine’s artists develop and promote their work, right now the sky’s the limit.”
